ReFamily ReEntry Youth Mentoring Works!
“Cassy”
Cassy, 10, enrolled in Family ReEntry’s Champions Mentoring Program after her parents were incarcerated. Like many children in her community who are affected by parental incarceration, Cassy is being raised by her grandmother who works long hours at a factory while she cares for her younger siblings who are 7 and 9 years old. In her 10 years, Cassy has already taken on the responsibility and care of her siblings, while also worrying about her grandmother, her community which is unsafe and plagued by violence, and her parents who will be released from prison later this year. Although Cassy is eager for her parents’ return home, she is worried about how her life will change when they are home.
To address her concerns, Family ReEntry’s Youth Programs matched Cassy with a mentor, Debbie, with whom she has developed a strong bond since connecting last school year. Cassy now looks forward to sharing her experiences at school, home, and in her community.
Debbie has provided Cassy with essential care and attention that she needs – a caring adult with whom to share her fears and worries, but most importantly, she can relax and enjoy childhood with Debbie.
