Babz Rawls-Ivy is the editor of the Inner-City News, the host of daily WNHH FM’s “LoveBabz LoveTalk,” and a frequent guest on WNHH shows. Jeff Grant is the executive director of Family ReEntry, a social service organization in Bridgeport working with people who have gotten out of prison, and helping to prevent them from going back in.

They’ve both also served prison sentences themselves. They are now co-hosts of a new show on WNHH, “Criminal Justice Insider,” that tackles criminal justice issues from the inside out.

“Criminal Justice Insider” will air once a month on WNHH, featuring Rawls-Ivy, Grant, and a series of guests as they talk about the lives of people in prison and how it affects not only the prisoners themselves, but the family.

When one family member goes to prison, “the whole family goes to prison,” they agreed on their debut episode.

They will also talk about the lives of people who have gotten out, and the factors that contribute to them going back in — or staying out for good by rebuilding their lives, a reality both of them have lived.

Did you know that children and teens that have positive adult connections outside their family fare better off emotionally, socially, and academically?

Research has shown that healthy relationships with adults can facilitate positive youth development and reduce the likelihood of negative behaviors including delinquency and anti-social behaviors.

For the last 15 years, Family ReEntry has provided mentoring support with a focus on prevention and intervention to help vulnerable children and youth who are impacted by crime, violence, and incarceration. In this last year, Family ReEntry has demonstrated positive outcomes for more than 100 children by providing one-to-one mentoring support and case management services. Mentors are volunteers who are able to build caring connections with children and teens, helping to encourage healthy behaviors, enhancing social & problem solving skills, and teaching effective strategies for coping with stress. Children who feel they are supported will have better outcomes; and mentoring is a proven strategy that has demonstrated positive gains for children and youth at-risk.

Through Family ReEntry’s work, we have seen the following outcomes for children and youth:

Approximately 70% of youth matched with a mentor reduced their engagement in risky behaviors such as truancy; use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs; fighting; and delinquency.

95% of youth surveyed reported experiencing a strong relational connection to their mentor.

As a result of mentoring, children and youth also demonstrated increased ability to problem-solve, demonstrated greater ability to control strong (negative) emotions, and worried less overall.

As a new school year approaches, FRE is looking to you and the community at-large for support to improve lives of less fortunate children and youth.

Family ReEntry’s 2016-17 Annual Appeal: We Need Your Help!

Family ReEntry’s 2016-17 Annual Appeal

The Problem

Even as the Connecticut government is closing prisons and reducing the prison population to the lowest level since the 1970s – a good thing – the fiscal crisis has caused it to terminate the funding for and close EVERY community-based nonresidential prisoner reentry behavioral health program in the state. (Family ReEntry’s residential and intervention programs were unaffected.) This means thousands of people, many or most of them people of color, will be released from jails and prisons this year without access to mental health services, substance abuse counseling, life skills training, family therapy, housing opportunities, education, or even minimum wage jobs. Without this critical support, research shows that most will likely recidivate and will return to prison in record numbers…but not before they re-engage in the very behavior for which they were incarcerated in the first place. A very bad thing – for everyone.

The Solution

With fewer government dollars to support our mission, Family ReEntry is getting creative. We are seeking out and finding innovative solutions for these critical problems. Our new First Chance Society initiative is designed to disrupt the intergenerational cycle of incarceration by giving at-risk youth and families a first chance at the kind of opportunities that they may have been denied because of poverty, race and/or zip code. And, giving returning citizens the first chance they may have never had before their incarceration. We are growing our award-winning programs – Family ReEntry is opening four new intervention programs with even more new programs on the horizon. And we are up at the Capitol intensely advocating for criminal justice reform and fairness for all.

I have issued a challenge to Harvard Business School Professor Eugene Soltes. I will meet him in Cambridge (or anywhere) to debate his book: "Why They Do It: Inside the Mind of the White-Collar Criminal." He can question me about my white-collar crime and ministry, and I can question him about his ethics in researching and writing his book. I hope you will attend if he accepts? About Lynn Springer

Lynn Springer is the Founding Advocate of the Innocent Spouse & Children Project. As the innocent partner of a white-collar criminal, and a mother, Lynn is called to this ministry with a heart of compassion and understanding. She assists women and families in finding ethical ways through faith and practical solutions to a new, sturdy, healthy way of life. Lynn’s concern for children and social justice for all people led her to several nonprofit Board and volunteer situations, including: as curriculum consultant and essay reader at Friends of Nick, a NYC faith-based foundation created to build character and integrity in underprivileged inner city youth; as a member of the Board of Directors of Pathways, Greenwich, CT, at which she advocated for the needs and care of the mentally ill; and on the Board of the International Aids Charitable Foundation, NYC. She is a long-time supporter of criminal justice/prison initiatives: Re-Entry Ministry, a faith- based halfway house for women in E. Bridgeport, CT, Family ReEntry in Bridgeport & New Haven, CT, a nonprofit serving formerly incarcerated people and their families, and Pivot Ministries, Bridgeport, CT, a faith-based halfway house for addiction recovery. As a woman of faith, Lynn was pleased to serve terms as Deacon and Senior Deacon at the Second Congregational Church of Greenwich, CT. Together with her husband Rev. Jeff Grant, Lynn co-founded the Fresh Start Garden of Hope - a Family Reentry project where ex-offenders helped to convert a blighted block in inner city Bridgeport into the largest privately owned public use park and garden in the State of Connecticut. The Art of Surviving Prison Workshops offer hope and inspiration to anyone in need of a second chance in life.
